Occasional outage of services

Posted on 2019-05-142020-03-01 by The Technician

Dear members, friends, and enemies of the FeministWiki,

The world of software is very fast-moving, and it’s important to keep the software on a server up-to-date to ensure its security and stability. Since the FeministWiki consists of many software components, there’s often something to update on the server, and I try to perform these updates in a timely fashion.

Additionally, I sometimes work on the configuration of the various components, as well a the few custom scripts and programs written for the FeministWiki, to continuously improve the infrastructure.

While doing all this work, it’s not uncommon for some services to become temporarily unavailable, report errors, show broken pages, and so on.

(Big companies avoid this problem by running many clones of a server in parallel, preparing updates/changes on a test server, then deploying the changes in one instant when they’re ready. We sadly don’t have this luxury.)

As such, please don’t worry –or rejoice, if you’re an enemy– when it looks like something’s broken. Test it again in 5 to 10 minutes, and if it’s still broken then please contact the technician at technician@feministwiki.org. (Especially if you’re an enemy, contact the technician as quickly as possible to tell her/him that the site is broken because it sucks!)

— Kind regards, the technician 🙂
